“You will not read a more important book about America this year.”—The Economist
“A riveting book.”—The Wall Street Journal
“Essential reading.”—David Brooks, New York Times
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of white working-class Americans. The disintegration of this group, a process that has been slowly occurring now for more than forty years, has been reported with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

I found this book interesting and an eye opener. Hard to believe that people who have lived this life come out the other end. Although the author may seem too self indulgent it all fits into his story. Well written hard to put down.

The author is a very talented writer – and thinker – that has written a marvel of a book. Autobiographical but also incredibly insightful about his life in a dysfunctional family that propelled him from a member of a poor family to a very successful career trajectory.
His insights into the working poor and the disadvantaged classes is powerful and compelling. If you’ve never faced financial hardship, it’s also quite eye opening. And it’s not about race whatsoever, but about how poverty can be a problem whatever color of skin you possess.

I grew up in Appalachia and found this book to be a very accurate portrayal.
It was an accurate and beautiful read.
The only thing negative I can say is the author is unaware of his male privilege when describing opportunities and over coming certain obstacles.
This does not make his character any less remarkable though.
The grandmother reminds me of my own and this alone makes me want to read this novel over and over again.
Loved it.

My wife and I have determined that Hillbilly Elegy is the best movie we have had the opportunity to watch in recent years. This story of one man’s life unfolds so beautifully and poignantly. No politics, just real people living real lives. You will not forget this movie. We highly recommend.

I enjoyed his writing. I feel like I can relate to many of the hillbilly ways. Born and raised in north Louisiana, I had a decent childhood, don’t get me wrong, but there was much that I related to or witnessed. Now live in East Tn and still see similar circumstances. Government can’t fix it, can potentially help in some ways, but it’s a “need to break the cycle” kind of event that needs to happen, I think. I don’t understand how anyone can disagree with the book because it’s written from his perspective. Anyway, bless you Mr Vance and your amazing wife too! I look forward to seeing what you bring to the table. Oh and you and your family are always invited to mine!
